Hayden awoke to a loud crash and bolted up on her elbows, trying to get her bearings. It took her several seconds to remember she was in her apartment—Zane’s apartment—and to realize it was most likely him getting home.

She heard masculine voices at the other end of the place, then laughter, then another bump and a curse. Fully awake now and curious, she went out into the living room and stopped in her tracks at the sight of Zane being supported by Drake and Gabe as they stumbled into the kitchen.

“Are you okay?” she asked, torn between amusement and concern.

“Smells like food,” Zane slurred without looking at her, and Hayden’s brows shot up. “Needta eat. Drink some water. Be fine.”

“Hello there,” Drake said, sounding much more coherent than his twin. “We’re good. Well, Gabe and I are. This one”—he rubbed Zane’s head vigorously—“was overserved.” He laughed, just sloppily enough that Hayden knew he wasn’t sober either.

Zane seemed to realize for the first time that someone besides his brothers was in the room, and he stood up straighter, untangled himself from Drake and Gabe, and approached her.

“Hi,” she said when he was a foot away, squinting at her as if he was seeing double or triple.

Several seconds passed as he studied her with his dreamy blue eyes. Hayden’s brows rose again as she waited for him to say something, a grin tugging at her lips.

Zane finally lifted a hand and pressed it to the side of her face and clumsily ran it down her cheek. “You,” he said slowly but intently and definitely drunkly, “are the mos’ beautiful girl in the world.” Beautiful came out as only two syllables.

His brothers laughed and shook their heads, and Zane, holding on to the counter to support himself, whipped around to them and insisted, “She is,” but it came out sounding like shiz.

“Hayden is beautiful and you’re shit-faced,” Gabe affirmed.

“Jus’ need some food. Water,” Zane said again.

No one asked why she was there. Hayden was glad for the reprieve.

“I ordered you some healthy food,” she said, brushing past him and going to the fridge. “Organic.”

“’Mazing,” he said as he watched her remove the carryout container, set it on the counter, and take off the lid. Then he looked at her and said, “You’re ’mazing.”

“I get that a lot,” she said lightly. “Sorry, I didn’t get you two anything,” she said to Gabe and Drake. “Zane has some bananas though.”

“I’m good,” Gabe said, and Drake helped himself to a banana. “He ate dinner,” he continued, pointing to Zane.

“Can’t feel it,” Zane informed him, taking a fork out of the silverware drawer and digging into the cold teriyaki bowl.

“I can heat it up,” Hayden said, but Zane shook his head, leaned over the counter, supporting himself with an elbow, and shoved food in his mouth, still wearing his winter coat.

“Your manners are atrocious,” Drake said to him.

“Fuck you,” Zane slurred, then took another bite.

“Do you guys need to sleep here?” Hayden asked Zane’s brothers, figuring she could sleep on the couch if necessary.
